Nolting Holzfeuerungstechnik GmbH under new management

– Alexander Thobe takes over from Stefan Spork

– Continuation of the initiated growth and innovation path

Detmold, 26 June 2023: Dr Alexander Thobe has taken over the management of Nolting Holzfeuerungstechnik GmbH as of 1 June 2023. He succeeds Stefan Spork, who is returning to the solar industry after three and a half years at Nolting.

After completing his doctorate in physics, Alexander Thobe spent nine years in various roles in the automotive industry. As a research engineer, he developed technologies for series production at automotive supplier Bosch. Subsequently, leading manufacturers in this sector benefited from his role as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company in product development and purchasing. Most recently, he was a manager at the Volkswagen Group, where he was responsible for projects in the areas of procurement and product strategy. His desire to drive forward the energy and heating transition as the most pressing issue of our time, as well as his enthusiasm for the long-term development of a family-run company, led him to join Nolting.

‘In view of the shortage of renewable energies, wood firing system is an important future technology for managing the heating transition. With wood utilisation increasing year on year, it will continue to gain relevance in the coming years. At Nolting, we want to enable our customers to utilise valuable biomass energy efficiently and in an environmentally friendly way with innovative products,’ said Alexander Thobe on the occasion of the change in management.

‘Stefan Spork has optimally utilised the positive market environment in the last two years to significantly increase Nolting’s turnover and laid the foundation for expanding the export business. I would like to thank Mr Spork on behalf of the entire company for the successes of recent years,’ continued Alexander Thobe.

Wood energy is climate-neutral

(Berlin, 02.09.2022) In a joint letter to Federal Minister Steffi Lemke, associations from the forestry and wood industry as well as the plant engineering sector criticise the presentation of wood energy on the official website of the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV). On a recently published topic page, it states, among other things, that heating with wood is ‘not climate-neutral’.

‘Wood is a versatile renewable resource that is utilised holistically and in cycles. Through efficient material and energy utilisation, it makes an indispensable overall contribution to achieving climate targets. A one-sided presentation of this complex issue fails to recognise the multifunctionality of forests and wood as well as the performance of the value chain,’ says the alliance of associations. Abbreviated and misleading assessments by the state are unsettling for citizens. This is not compatible with the ministerial task of consumer protection.

Fendt Caravan invests for the second time in a large wood-burning system from Nolting

High-quality caravans since 1970

Fendt-Caravan GmbH in the Donau-Ries district has been a manufacturer of leisure vehicles for over 50 years. Fendt-Caravan is regarded as the class leader and quality leader when it comes to caravans. The focus is on design and the use of selected materials. Many awards and prizes underpin the maximum functionality, high-quality fittings from master craftsmen and convincing quality.

Expanding the CO2-neutral heat supply

An efficient environmental management system in accordance with the international DIN ISO 14001 standard has been introduced within the Fendt Caravan company. This system brings about continuous improvements in environmental performance and environmental protection, including the use of modern wood-burning systems with innovative fine dust filter technology.

Back in 2000, Fendt-Caravan invested in a USK 1751 wood firing system with a nominal output of 1,750 kW and a NOLTING S 300 silo discharge system to utilise the chips from wood processing to generate heat. The system was equipped 20 years ago with fully automatic complete ash removal onto an ash container and electrostatic precipitator. Over the years, the wood firing system has been repeatedly upgraded to the latest technical standard and still reliably fulfils its task today.

Due to the high demand for caravans, Fendt decided to expand production. The additional production chips generated by the addition of the further production line were to be used to heat the new premises in a CO2-neutral way. The two decades of good experience with NOLTING led to initial discussions on the framework conditions for the new project between the technical managing director of Fendt-Caravan, Mr Andreas Dir, and the specialist consultants from NOLTING at the LIGNA 2017 trade fair in Hanover. The trust that has grown over many years was further underpinned by the fact that NOLTING was one of the few manufacturers of wood-burning systems in the medium output range to present the successful TÜV test in accordance with boiler standard EN 303-5 for the LCS-R boiler series at LIGNA 2017. In addition to the high boiler efficiency, the TÜV standard also confirms the operational and fire safety, which is an important investment argument, especially considering safety and insurance aspects.

Thanks to the continuous further development of the NOLTING product programme and the addition of fine dust filters in recent years, a modern technical solution for the new task could be developed and proposed.

Despite the current difficult situation, Trüggelmann invests in a large wood firing system including filter technology with extremely low residual dust content from Nolting

High-quality customised furniture for over 80 years

A. Trüggelmann GmbH & Co. KG, based in Bielefeld, has been a manufacturer of high-quality furniture for living rooms, bedrooms, dining areas and entrances for over 80 years. The focus is on innovative solutions, the use of special materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Customised production results in quality products with a particularly long-lasting design. In order to keep pace with constantly changing market conditions, the product lines are continuously adapted and new, future-proof ideas are developed.

Renewing the heat supply

Burning wood-based materials from production is traditionally part of the woodworking trade. The cost of disposing of wood waste from production can be avoided and the so-called wood waste becomes an ecological fuel that can be utilised directly on site.

The existing boiler made by Nolting in 1991 was getting on in years. Due to the good experience, the extensive support in applying for subsidies and the convincing technology, especially the filter technology, Kai Trüggelmann decided to invest in a moving grate firing system with ceramic filter despite the current difficult situation.

For the new heating system, Trüggelmann is investing in a NOLTING LCS-RV moving grate firing system. The nominal heat output is approx. 950 kW with a fuel moisture content of max. M30. The boiler is equipped with automatic ignition, automatic output adjustment and under-grate ash removal. These components ensure convenient operation with user-friendly ash disposal. The reference fuels are 100 % wood residues in the form of machine and chipper chips from production with a grain size < P16S in accordance with CEN/TS 14961 and a water content of M 10 in accordance with CEN/TS 14961.

Nolting presents a new buffer storage management system

Buffer storage tanks can significantly increase the efficiency of wood-burning systems. However, this requires intelligent control in order to utilise the storage volume correctly. Correctly dimensioned storage tanks, in conjunction with optimised storage tank management, can significantly extend system running times. The extended running times in partial load operation significantly reduce emissions and improve system efficiency.

The ingenuity lies in the number of storage tank sensors used: the more storage tank sensors are used in the buffer tanks, the more accurate the measurement. Thanks to decades of experience in the carpentry market, with its much stricter requirements in terms of system efficiency and pollutant emissions, Nolting has developed a buffer storage management system that optimally solves this task.

The output of the firing system is regulated depending on the charge level of the storage tank. The large 9.7″ touch panel displays a graphical overview showing the charging status of the output and the temperatures.

The scope of delivery includes the control unit and the ‘storage tank charging’ switching set, the corresponding number of immersion sensors and immersion sleeves.

The use of up to 12 temperature sensors in the buffer cylinders ensures flexible, optimised system runtimes and thus avoids uneconomical heating and cooling phases. These measures, sliding outdoor temperature control, anticipatory reaction of the firing system through temperature monitoring at the consumption return and loading of the storage tanks with a constantly high flow temperature even at the lowest boiler output reduce emission values and ensure long system running times.

Successful Trade Fair in Netherlands

The Horti contact show is the most important show for the Dutch horticulture sector. The operators of greenhouses use the show to find out about the latest trends and to make contact with suppliers.

The wood fired boiler technology is definitely a future CO2-neutral energy source, available and durably favorable prices according its fuel.

Nolting is for many years active in the Dutch market, besides of woodworking companies many greenhouse operators are Nolting clients. The ambitious targets of the EU to reduce CO2 emissions wood boilers have an important role to fulfil these targets; the wood boiler technology is becoming more and more interesting for process heat supply. The visitors informed themselves about the news of the combustion technology and the opportunities to filter the flue gas. Especially the fine dust emissions are becoming more and more a topic. Nolting provides a ceramic filter, which has got a very low emission value, below of 20mg/Nm³ the nominal allowed limit for emissions. The ceramic filter is limited to 3mg/Nm³ fine dust, that’s good for nature and men.
